Vol 2 | The Riff Raff | 27 Nov 2020
This week I bring to you the #WhereAustraliaRocks edition of The Riff Raff and Weekly Podcast.
On the back of the year that the music industry has had in 2020, I have to say it’s bloody awesome to see so much killer new local music coming through in recent weeks with the majority of what is featured this week, having been released in November.
I’m always a super optimistic and positive kind of guy and I’ve got a good feeling that 2021 is going to be a great one for the local rock scene here in Australia. Borders are starting to open up and we’ve got representation this week from most States!
This week is one for those of you that love your music LOUD, with a healthy dose of punky attitude and massive riffs.
It was awesome to have a chat with Sean Dennis from Elephant Gun, who have just released their first new music in 20 years. That album is titled Now To Survive and be sure to check out our chat by clicking right here….
The feature artist on the Weekly Podcast is Molly & The Krells who hail from Sydney. They’ve just released their new single Expectations and I’ll feature a snippet of my recent chat with their frontman Blake Cateris.
SIlverback Touring have just announced the launch of The Silverback Agency, with a roster of killer local and New Zealand artists and I’ll feature a few tracks from some of those, including the latest from Bad Moon Born.
New tracks from The Kids, The Wolston Butchers, Avalanche and Wolf Creek are featured….and to set the scene, The Living End Roll On album was released on this day 20 years ago and I thought Carry Me Home was the perfect song to kick things into gear for this week’s Podcast!!!
Don’t stop believin’,
LATEST ROCK RELEASES
Molly And The Krells
If you dig pop-punk of the hook-tastic variety from the likes of Bowling For Soup, Jimmy Eay World, Weezer and Green Day, then Sydney based Molly And The Krells could very well be the best thing you’ve never heard!
They’ve just released their latest single Expectations, which follows on from What Went Wrong, released earlier in 2020. One of my absolute finds of 2020!!
Kill Street Blues
In the early NOUGHTS the Aussie Alt Rock scene was at it’s peak dominating Triple J airwaves, filling festival lineups and Elephant Gun were right in the thick of things. Signed to Roadrunner Records, touring with The Screaming Jets, Shihad, Grinspoon, Sunk Loto, Powderfinger, Magic Dirt and hitting the main stage of the 1998/99 Falls Festival and even the Big Day Out.
Fast forward now to 2020 and their new album Now To Survive is out via Dinner For Wolves. Here’s a taste of that album with the massive riffs and rock n roll energy of Kill Street Blues.
Go Back To Canberra
Sydney punk legends The Kids recently dropped their latest Go Back To Canberra.
I saw The Kids live a few years back supporting Skid Row and these guys sure bring a gritty punch in the face with their live show, along with this latest single!
Sydney-based alternative-metal quartet Wolf Creek have just revealed their ferocious new single ‘Viral’ – produced by Stevie Knight (Stand Atlantic, Yours Truly, RedHook) and mixed by Dave Petrovic (Northlane, Tonight Alive).
Opening with crisp distortion, feverish drums and the bristling lead vocals of Chase Bosward, ‘Viral’ is a deftly produced exemplar of alternative-metal. Taking cues from luminaires Deftones, Architects and Bring Me The Horizon, ‘Viral’ sets a manic pace before introducing its rattling, yet wholly satisfying bridge.
Jeffy And The Bobcats
Jeffy and The Bobcats create an endearing and soulful brand of music. Influenced by the sounds of Funk, Rock, Soul, R & B and Indie, they synthesize jams that make you sad dance into serenity. They effortlessly conjure a sonic that is both vintage and modern.
Jeffy and The Bobcats is the product of collaboration between singer/songwriter Elliott Okerstrom, musician/producer Voya and indefinable enigma Jeffy Bobcat.
“The Living End – Roll On— 20 Years of greatness!!
Released 27th November 2000″

All Good Things join forces with Hollywood Undead to release ‘For The Glory’!
Next-generation rock group All Good Things just dropped a monstrous new version of their anthemic hit “For The Glory,” now featuring Johnny 3 Tears and Charlie Scene of Hollywood Undead.
The track, an unapologetic victory song for the underdog, with lyrics like “We celebrate with the city tonight/ Hear the hometown cheer/ It’s the ultimate high,” has already resonated with millions of listeners around the world with its original version reaching over 100M streams across digital platforms to date. This new, amplified rendition comes ahead of the band’s first full-length studio album since signing with Better Noise Music, due later this year.
“For The Glory (featuring Hollywood Undead)” is now available to stream or download now
To accompany the release of the new version of the single, the band also premiered a music video today, directed by Wombat Fire. Featuring footage from the upcoming horror-thriller feature film The Retaliators (in which the song appears, coming later this year from Better Noise Films), the new video very much embodies the band’s origins. The LA-based group began by creating monster rock songs that could be used across media like games, TV and films. They created and expanded this cinematic rock sonic profile in reaction to their growing fan base, who could hear their music featured in countless TV shows, games, films and ads worldwide – including the popular game Mortal Kombat, the NFL Super Bowl 52 broadcast, episodes of “Shark Tank,” “Criminal Minds,” “Vampire Diaries” and ads for Sony PlayStation.
Of this new version the band said, “‘For the Glory’ is a swagger anthem about celebrating a hard earned victory against all odds, with all the people around you that helped get you there. We’re so touched by how many people have connected with this song since we first released it. We love collaborating and are so grateful to our friends Johnny 3 Tears and Charlie Scene from Hollywood Undead for hopping on this and taking it to the next level.”
Johnny 3 Tears of Hollywood Undead added, “It was an honor for us to work with one of the best rock bands making music today. ‘For The Glory’ is already an amazing song, happy we could add our own style to it”
Since signing to Better Noise Music in 2020, All Good Things have seen their music more than double in monthly streams across digital platforms, averaging over 2.8M streams per month for each of their songs. Their first single release with BNM, the high-energy track “Kingdom,” was met with praise from fans and critics alike. Riding the momentum of their ever-growing fanbase worldwide, the band is hard at work on their next studio album due later this year.

BILLY F GIBBONS (ZZ Top) Releases ‘West Coast Junkie’, The First Track From Forthcoming HARDWARE Album
Hardware, the third solo album from ZZ Top front man Billy Gibbons, has wrapped recording and post-production and is set for release June 4th by Concord Records. The album was recorded at Escape Studio in California’s high desert, near Palm Springs, and was produced by Gibbons along with Matt Sorum and Mike Fiorentino with engineer Chad Shlosser providing additional production. The album’s release is preceded by the release of the single ‘West Coast Junkie’ which is out now. The video for the track was filmed near Joshua Tree, a stone’s throw from the studio and can be viewed through this link:
Sorum, veteran of Guns ‘N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver and the Cult also serves as Hardware’s drummer and was joined in the album’s core band by guitarist Austin Hanks. The same Gibbons-Sorum-Hanks aggregation recorded The Big Bad Blues, Gibbon’s earlier solo effort for Concord and winner of the Blues Foundation’s Blues Music Award.

While a truly broad spectrum of approaches is notable on the album’s hard driving tracks there is, to be sure, no mistaking the remarkable tone and growling vocals that are hallmarks of Billy Gibbons’ artistry. Elements of traditional hard rock, neo-metal, country rock, new wave, blues and even surf music make Hardware difficult to categorize and it would be a fool’s game to do so. In fact, “Desert High,” the album’s last track, is a spoken word piece accompanied by a sinewy guitar that evokes the legend Gram Parsons whose death 48 years ago took place very close to where Hardware was recorded.
Billy sums up the album’s ecumenical construct, “We holed up in the desert for a few weeks in the heat of the summer and that in itself was pretty intense. To let off steam we just ‘let it rock’ and that’s what Hardware is really all about. For the most part, it’s a raging rocker but always mindful of the desert’s implicit mystery.”

New Zealand Rockers Capital Theatre Release Debut Single ‘Force To Fight’, produced by Mike Clink
NZ Rock Band CAPITAL THEATRE have spent the past six months recording their debut album with Guns N’ Roses producer Mike Clink, and will release the new single, “Force To Fight” to radio on Monday March 29.
The concept album follows a hero’s journey from track 1 to 10 with Force To Fight being the crescendo of the battle. Given the global events that have unfolded in 2020, it was agreed that the stage has been set for an explosive rock track like Force To Fight to enter the zeitgeist.
The music video shot in New Zealand by acclaimed director Gregor Nicholas is set in a boxing ring where characters from extreme factions of the left and right scrap it out. Nicholas says “This is an in-your-face satire, an allegorical depiction of the fraying of American society where each opponent in the ring represents a different archetype. The boxing ring is a metaphor for a nation polarized and convulsed by division, its factions encouraged by their leader to meet violence with violence.”
Targetting the US election, the red and blue corner match ups provide a commentary on some of the social, political, and racial divides that we see not only in America 2020, but worldwide.
“The song itself was written in 2019 as a prediction of things to come, but yes, the video definitely is an examination of the way the world is in 2020. Are we on the verge of absolute chaos, who knows? But there are so many clear examples of how extreme it is becoming in a global society fixated on social media, with social media giants and irresponsible politicians fueling the fire,” Says Capital Theatre’s Adam Stevenson.
Force To Fight audio can be found on all streaming platforms now.
CAPITAL THEATRE & THE HERO’S JOURNEY
A HEROS JOURNEY was recorded in Los Angeles, Hollywood’s NRG studios early in 2020, the Covid-19 Pandemic forced a quick relocation back to NZ.
After New Zealand’s six week lock-down, the band were granted access to Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios in Auckland, where via a system of FaceTime and a live audio stream within ProTools, they were able to reconnect with Clink in LA and continue recording and mixing the remainder of the album.
Album Producer Mike Clink says “What attracted me to the project is that each song takes you on a journey delivered with conviction through the music and the lyrics. From pre-production through recording, we fine-tuned each song to capture those messages. While this album was technically challenging to record with distance and time changes, it did not diminish the quality. Paul, Adam and Roy, are a band of brothers and I enjoyed being on this journey with them.”
